Yggdrasil is now Toskar
· The Toskar team · 2 min read
The project you may know as Yggdrasil is now Toskar. The open-source engine is Toskar Core, and the apps are Toskar Desktop and Toskar Mobile. The new home is toskar.ai, and the old yggdrasil.yeix.io addresses forward there.
What Toskar does hasn't changed. It runs AI models on computers you already own, recommends models that fit your hardware, connects several computers into one system, reads your documents, and keeps your conversations on your machines.
Why Toskar
In Norse myth, Yggdrasil is the world tree, and Ratatoskr is the squirrel who runs up and down its trunk carrying messages between the realms. Toskar is named after him, because that's the job: carrying requests between your devices, your computers, and the models running on them.
Yggdrasil isn't going anywhere. It's still the tree in the logo, and the realms in the app keep their names: Mimir for knowledge, Muninn for memory, Bifrost for connecting computers, and the rest.
What you need to do: nothing
If you already run it, everything keeps working through the rename:
- Your data stays put. An existing install keeps its folder and database where they are. Nothing is moved.
- Upgrades move you over.
brew upgradeswitches the Homebrew formula totoskar, andsudo apt-get upgrademoves the Linux package. The old tap and apt line keep working. - Old commands still run.
yggdrasil-daemonandyggctlare installed as links totoskarandtoskarctl, so scripts, services, and MCP settings in Claude Desktop, Cursor, or VS Code that use the old names keep working. - Your connections keep working. API keys, webhooks, and
YGGDRASIL_environment variables are still accepted, alongside the newTOSKAR_names. - Computers on an older version still pair. A computer running 1.6 works with one still on 1.5.
The App Store may show the old name for a little while longer, while the listings catch up.
New installs
On a Mac with Homebrew:
brew tap yeixio/toskar https://github.com/yeixio/toskar-core
brew install yeixio/toskar/toskar
toskar
Then open http://127.0.0.1:7331 in your browser. Linux packages, Windows, and the other options are on the download page, along with how to use Toskar from other devices on your network.
Also in 1.6
The release that carries the new name brings a few other changes. Chat now picks up where you left off: leave for another page and come back, and the conversation you were in reopens instead of starting over. The iPhone app gets the same chat choices as the web, and can run a smaller model on the phone itself. Everything else is in What's new.
Toskar Core is free and open source. If you run into anything after the rename, open an issue.
